The Long Beach Unified School district in California is funneling money to a progressive activist group which is paying students $1,400 each to become racial and social justice warriors.

The district paid $900,000 for a one-year contract to Californians for Justice (CFJ), a “youth-powered” non-profit that pushes racial justice ideology on children, the Free Press reports.

Of that, $60,200 was allocated to pay 33 students and 10 families or parents $1,400 each to participate in CFJ’s training programs.

According to the contract, the program exists to “provide assistance to teachers, administrators and selected students in building strategies to support cultural understanding and change.”

On CFJ’s website, the group claims to have “trained hundreds of youth of color in Long Beach to be community leaders and organizers,” adding that it “provides leadership development opportunities throughout the school year and summer to ensure our youth leaders gain the political education and valuable organizing skills they need to lead social justice movements.”

“It’s so fun! You get paid good, you can have a fun time,” one of the students posted recently to Instagram.

A spokesman for the Long Beach School District framed the paid program as “internships” which are to ensure “equitable participation in CFJ programs, embracing diverse perspectives in education.” Quite diversity word salad there.

Los Angeles County Supervisors Hilda Solis and Lindsey Horvath have proposed a plan to “depopulate and decarcerate” county jails, releasing criminals to address what they call a “systemic racism” in criminal justice.

Solis, a former Democratic congresswoman and Secretary of Labor under President Barack Obama, and Horvath, a former mayor of West Hollywood who tried to bar President Donald Trump from the city, have proposed the plan, which will be voted on at the next Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday.

The plan states: “To depopulate and decarcerate is a monumental task, and the Board is committed to redress historical wrongs, deeply rooted in systemic racism and prejudice, and reverse status quo responses to poverty, mental health and medical needs, and substance use dependencies.” It calls for the Supervisors to declare a “humanitarian crisis” and to take steps to reduce the population of inmates through various kinds of releases.

Supervisor Kathryn Barger is the only Republican member of the board and is opposed to the new plan.

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Board of Education approved a plan Tuesday to cut one-third of the Los Angeles School Police Department (LASPD) force and use the funds to help improve black student achievement.

The cuts came last year after activists protested to “abolish” or “defund” the school police department, which protects students from crime — particularly in predominantly black and Latino areas of the city, where there is more gang activity.

Now the plan has been approved, the Times reported Tuesday:

In a major overhaul of the Los Angeles School Police Department, the Board of Education on Tuesday approved a plan that cuts a third of its officers, bans the use of pepper spray on students and diverts funds from the department to improve the education of Black students.

The police overhaul by the Los Angeles Unified School District provides funding for school “climate coaches” who will work to promote positive school culture and address implicit bias at every secondary school. Staff to support and an achievement plan for Black students will also be added.

The approved plan will cut 133 positions: 70 sworn officers, 62 non-sworn officers and 1 support staff member. At the meeting, Chief Leslie Ramirez said the reduction would leave the force with 211 officers.

One school board member, George Mckenna, was quoted by the Times as saying: “The parents expect us to have safe schools. And if you think the police are the problem, I think you got a problem yourself.”

However, he was one of few who dissented.

Applicants looking to teach mathematics at the University of California campuses are evaluated based on their past contributions to “diversity.”

According to the current job postings for these positions, applications must include a “diversity statement” detailing the applicants’ “past and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion.”

Several listings for tenure-track or tenured mathematics professor positions at University of California campuses included the stipulation, including listings for positions at UCLA, UC San Diego, and UC Irvine. 

The University of California San Diego offers applicants a detailed explanation of how to construct such a statement, noting that the document should be one to two pages, and encouraging applicants “to provide specific information on the motivation, duration, and impact of their outreach and mentoring activities.”

“The purpose of the statement is to identify candidates who have the professional skills, experience, and/or willingness to engage in activities that will advance our campus equity, diversity and inclusion goals,” the university explains.

A detailed explanation of the evaluation process for these statements is also available from UCSD.  This document notes the purpose of the diversity statement as a method of evaluating a candidate’s “awareness of the barriers that exist for groups historically under-represented in math and science, “past efforts in diversity and outreach activities; and “future plans for diversity and outreach activities.”

The university notes that of these considerations, “past efforts are given far greater weight than merely showing awareness of barriers or stating future plans.”

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The California NAACP is pushing to get rid of the national anthem that they’re calling racist and anti-black.

“This song is wrong; it shouldn’t have been there, we didn’t have it ’til 1931, so it won’t kill us if it goes away,” said the organization’s president Alice Huffman.

Colin Kaepernick started the NFL protests, which quickly spread to bring attention to systemic racial injustice in the country. But Huffman says Kaepernick’s message was lost when it turned into a debate about the flag.

Huffman adds that the protests did lead her to look at the lyrics of the “Star Spangled Banner” especially the parts of the anthem we don’t typically sing.

“It’s racist; it doesn’t represent our community, it’s anti-black,” she said.

Huffman is referring to the third stanza which includes the lyric “no refuge could save the hireling and slave from the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave.”

“That’s an extreme way of doing things,” said Kenneth Lu, a veteran living in Davis.

The opinions varied at the VFW in West Sacramento.

“I believe it’s a slap across the face, whether there’s a flaw in the context, I don’t see it that way. I have to stick with our traditions and our values and what we represent,” said Sydney Lugo.

“It won’t solve any problem,” said veteran John Cox.

Huffman says it may not solve anything, but it’s a step towards social justice that she says is long overdue.

“This is not about the flag. We love the flag. This is about a song that should never have been the national anthem. This country is a country that has shared values, and the more we respect each other, the better off we’ll be as a country,” said Huffman.

A separate resolution by the California NAACP is calling on Congress to censure President Donald Trump for his remarks about firing those who don’t stand for the anthem. They are also asking NFL teams to let Kaepernick play again.

(Breitbart California)  -  The Lt. Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, has released a statement offering lukewarm condemnation of the riots that prevented MILO’s final event of the “Dangerous Faggot Tour,” whilst smearing him as a “white supremacist.”

Newsom, who has launched a campaign for Governor of California in 2018, said in a statement that people experienced “both extremes at UC Berkeley’s campus last night, from the racism and misogyny of fly-by-night provocateur and white supremacist Milo Yiannopoulos, to the excessive response of a few protestors.”

The event was cancelled after left-wing rioters, who the university claim were not students, smashed ATMs and bank windows, looted a Starbucks, beat Trump supporters, pepper sprayed innocent individuals, set fires in the street, and sprayed the words “Kill Trump” on storefronts.

He then went on to attack President Donald Trump, who yesterday condemned the protests whilst threatening to cut university’s $350 million of federal funding, over half its budget.

“President Trump’s asinine threat to pull funding from Cal showed zero awareness of the real-world implications of a President’s words and actions. Stripping federal funds from UC would only create more innocent victims and more Trump carnage,” he said.

“President Trump is quick to attack American students, immigrants, women, the LGBT community, journalists, and our international allies but he is either too weak or too ignorant to stand up to white supremacists and others who spew hatred. That’s why the President and his extremist acolytes like Yiannopoulos need to hear from the resistance, loudly and repeatedly. We must continue to step in and stand up to resist reckless rhetoric and actions in a peaceful and forceful manner,” he continued.

Yesterday, on FOX News with Tucker Carlson, MILO pointed to leftists like Newsom as having “created an environment where it’s okay to say anything about the right,” (such as describing them as a white nationalist or supremacist,) as a means of “legitimizing the violence” of the left.”

(Los Angeles Times)  -  Police officers in California will soon track the race of those they pull over for traffic stops or encounter in the street, according to proposed guidelines released Friday by Democrat Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris.

The new rules, established by the passage of Assembly Bill 953 in 2015, are designed to help understand biases in policing efforts across the state. 

"Racial and identity profiling weaken public trust and have debilitating effects on communities," Harris said in a statement. "These regulations and data will help law enforcement improve policing practices and strengthen accountability.”

Aside from demographic information on race, gender and age of the person stopped, officers will have to record and collect the location, duration and reason for each stop under the proposed regulations. 

Officers also will be required to document the actions they take and the result of the encounter. The attorney general's office will make the data public by each law enforcement agency through its criminal justice data website, OpenJustice.

The arrangement comes roughly nine months after the university’s Black Student Union issued a set of demands in response to what its members contend are frequent “racist attacks” on campus, such as “racially insensitive remarks” and “microaggressions” by professors and students. One demand was for a “CSLA housing space delegated for Black students.”

“[It] would provide a cheaper alternative housing solution for Black students. This space would also serve as a safe space for Black CSLA students to congregate, connect, and learn from each other,” the demand letter stated.

The newly debuted Halisi Scholars Black Living-Learning Community “focuses on academic excellence and learning experiences that are inclusive and non-discriminatory,” Cal State LA spokesman Robert Lopez told The College Fix via email.

The public university has 192 furnished apartments in a residential complex on campus, and the Halisi community will be located there, Lopez said, adding it joins other themed living-learning communities already housed there.

Lopez declined to answer any additional questions or provide more details on the new community, such as how many rooms it encompasses, and whether it’s a whole floor or just a few rooms.

Cal State LA joins UConn, UC Davis and Berkeley in offering segregated housing dedicated to black students. While these housing options are technically open to all students, they’re billed and used as arrangements in which black students can live with one another.

(Sacramento Bee)  -  Democratic Rep. Loretta Sanchez, in an interview with Univision 19 that aired this weekend, suggested that President Barack Obama’s endorsement of U.S. Senate rival Kamala Harris was in part based on race.

Sanchez was asked why the president had endorsed Harris in the unusual race between two Democrats this year. Speaking in Spanish, she noted that Obama and Harris are longtime friends, then added: “She is African American. He is, too.”

Sanchez, in a statement after the interview aired, said she “in no way” implied or intended to imply Obama endorsed Harris for racial reasons. “I was stating the fact that the endorsement was based on their long-term political relationship,” she said.

Her remarks come days after she ripped Obama for endorsing Harris, arguing he should be focused on helping Democrats win the presidential race rather than inserting himself in a contest between two party members.

“California’s Senate seat does not belong to the political establishment – it belongs to the people of California,” Sanchez said, adding she believes voters will make their own choice in November.

Anxieties between African Americans and Latinos have been an underlying, yet seldom discussed, issue in California politics. Sanchez has aggressively courted Latinos in her campaign to succeed U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer. She has spoken about her Mexican American roots and her ability to speak Spanish. “I think we need a Latina in the U.S. Senate,” Sanchez said in January.

Born to a Jamaican father and Indian mother, Harris said after the shooting of five officers in Dallas that she doesn’t know a black man, be he a relative, a colleague or a friend, that has not been subjected to racial profiling or an unfair stop.

(Sacramento Bee)  -  Mario Guerra knew he had a problem the moment the state released Donald Trump’s list of California delegates on Monday, his name on page 4.

Latino activists and other politicians began calling and writing “literally within minutes,” said Guerra, a former mayor of Downey, in southeast Los Angeles County.

One read: “I can’t believe you betrayed your people,” he said.

Another: “My heart stopped … Is this true?”

Guerra, a member of the California Republican Party’s board of directors and a 2014 candidate for state Senate, said he made a mistake. He said he did not know – despite his position with the party and Trump’s standing as the presumptive nominee – that becoming a delegate would mean pledging his support.

On Thursday, Guerra said he asked the campaign to take him off the list, citing “personal business reasons.”

Trump’s difficulty assembling a steadfast list of delegates in California comes amid a slow warming of relations between the New York businessman and the party’s professional and political classes.

Trump met Thursday with House Speaker Paul Ryan, after Ryan said last week that he was not ready to endorse Trump.

In California, GOP Chairman Jim Brulte said it was at the Trump campaign’s behest that he invited Guerra and several other party officials to become delegates. Trump, he said, was seeking to include more California state officials at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland in July.

Brulte said he told Guerra that the request to become a delegate came from the Trump campaign.

Trump’s delegates now include more than a third of the state party’s board, including its vice chair, Harmeet Dhillon, and the chairman of the Republican Party of Los Angeles County, Mark Vafiades.

Among Central Valley Republicans, Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Elk Grove, has said he will support Trump after previously endorsing Ted Cruz, and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of Bakersfield is a delegate for Trump.

McCarthy said House leaders planned to ask Trump to meet with the entire GOP conference, according to The Hill newspaper.    (More at sacbee.com)

(ABC News)  -  The California Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to intervene in the case of a 6-year-old girl with Native American ancestry who was removed from her Los Angeles-area foster home and placed with relatives in Utah.

Foster parents Rusty and Summer Page are fighting the decision under the federal Indian Child Welfare Act to place Lexi with relatives of her father, who is part Choctaw.

The legal fight has gone on for years. Lower courts found the Pages had not proven Lexi would suffer emotional harm by the transfer.

Call me crazy, but this in an Indian,
not a little girl who is 1/64th Indian.

The Pages have three children and want to adopt Lexi, who has lived with them in Santa Clarita since she was 2.

Lexi clutched a teddy bear and cried as she was taken from the Pages' home on March 21 as neighbors prayed and sang hymns in support of the family.

The Pages' lawyer, Lori Alvino McGill, said she was not surprised by the court's decision not to intervene, saying it was a longshot she had to take.

"Every day without a stay threatens irreparable harm to the Pages and to Lexi," McGill said.

The appeal to return Lexi to the Pages is still before the 2nd District Court of Appeal in Los Angeles. McGill said she plans to take the case as far as the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Indian Child Welfare Act was passed in the 1970s to reunite Native American families broken up at disproportionately high rates due to cultural ignorance and biases within the child welfare system.

Lexi, who is 1/64th Native American, was 17 months old when she was removed from the custody of her birth parents. Her mother had substance abuse problems, and her father had a criminal history, according to court records.

McGill complained that the Pages have not been able to speak with Lexi since she was moved, as they were assured.

University of California pulls $30 million from prisons in orgy of political correctness

(Reuters)  -  The University of California system said on Friday it will drop its roughly $30 million worth of investments in private prison companies following demands from a black student group.

The decision comes amid a wave of student protests against racism at college campuses across the country as well as the Black Lives Matter civil rights movement against the U.S. criminal justice system, which disproportionately impacts black people.

The UC system's chief investment officer, Jagdeep Singh Bachher, made the decision after meeting with students of the Afrikan Black Coalition, university spokeswoman Dianne Klein said.

Klein said the UC system has a policy against "blanket divestment," but made the decision after further review.

"This made sense given our conclusion that, based on risk over the next several years, these holdings were not a good investment for a long-term investor such as UC," Klein said.

Klein said the amount invested was less than $30 million, a tiny fraction of the UC system's $100 billion investment portfolio. Klein said she did not know exactly which private prison companies the system held shares in or exactly how much money was invested.

The coalition, a California-wide student group, said the UC system had $25 million invested in Corrections Corporation of America and The Geo Group.

Calif. Indian Tribe Backs School's ‘Redskins’ Mascot

(Breitbart News)  -  An Indian tribe in California supports a local school’s use of the “Redskins” mascot that California legislators want to ban.

The Tule River Tribal Council, located in the heart of California’s Central Valley, wrote a letter to California Gov. Jerry Brown urging him to allow Tulare Union High School to continue using the “Redskins” mascot.

Brown is considering signing a new bill, AB 30, the California Racial Mascots Act, which was recently passed by the state legislature in the wake of media debate surrounding the name of the Washington Redskins NFL football team.

The tribe’s letter to the governor argues that while “the history surrounding the name ‘Redskin’ is negative…it is time to mend these feelings and move on.” The tribal council supports the school’s use of the mascot to express “tremendous pride and honor” felt by “students and alumni.” The letter adds: “Although we will never forget what has happened to us in the past, we do not wish to dwell on it either.” 

The school district has also written to the governor to oppose the bill. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a similar bill in 2004.
