"It was a splendid population - for all the slow, sleepy, sluggish-brained sloths stayed at home - you never find that sort of people among pioneers - you cannot build pioneers out of that sort of material. It was that population that gave to California a name for getting up astounding enterprises and rushing them through with a magnificent dash and daring and a recklessness of cost or consequences, which she bears unto this day - and when she projects a new surprise the grave world smiles as usual and says, "Well, that is California all over."

Marxist Bill Dictates How Tortillas Are Made
The rationale is based on research showing that the ingestion of folic acid by women of reproductive age can reduce neural tube birth defects, such as spina bifida and anencephaly.
The costs of government mandates always fall most heavily on small businesses and entrepreneurs. Los Angeles Times columnist Gustavo Arellano reports that small-batch tortilla makers—like La Princesita Tortilleria in East Los Angeles—are starting to panic. La Princesita uses the nixtamalization method (involving only corn masa, water, and lime), a culinary heritage that dates back millennia.
Arellano, who likens the taste of mass-produced corn tortillas found in most grocery stores to "the lickable part of an envelope," conducted a blind taste test of La Princesita's traditional tortillas alongside the same tortillas with folic acid. He immediately tasted the difference, with the folic acid version having a distinct but unidentifiable lingering taste, as well as a more rubbery texture while being chewed. La Princesita ran the same test with its employees, who concurred in the inferior taste—not to mention color—of the folic acid version.
"The danger is that tortilla makers who make it the traditional way lose their market advantage over others," Arellano wrote in an email exchange. "That would definitely have an impact on their bottom line, but even worse is the cultural impact. Imagine you practice a foodways that goes back thousands of years, then [are] told by the government you can't do it anymore? Cultural imperialism at its worst!"

California audit finds the state is broke
(The Center Square) – California just filed its 2021-2022 audited financial statement, 350 days past the filing deadline. In its filing, the state admits that COVID-era unemployment fraud cost the state $29 billion that must be paid back to the federal government, and that in 2022, the state had $256 billion more in liabilities than it had in unrestricted resources.
After accounting for restricted resources, such as purpose-specific state trust funds and bonds, the state still owed $55 billion more than it had.
California currently faces a $73 billion deficit for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, to which the Democratic legislature has responded with a proposal to cut this year’s budget by $2.1 billion and a proposal to spend $12 billion, or half the state’s rainy day fund.
With the state reducing 2023 jobs growth from 325,000 to just 50,000, revenues are likely to be much lower than expected.
With a significant expansion of benefits, including expanding taxpayer-funded MediCal to all illegal immigrants, and a major shift in illegal immigration from heavily-enforced Texas to California instead, state expenditures could end up being higher than expected.

School District Pays Children $1,400 To Become ‘Racial And Social Justice Warriors’
The Long Beach Unified School district in California is funneling money to a progressive activist group which is paying students $1,400 each to become racial and social justice warriors.
The district paid $900,000 for a one-year contract to Californians for Justice (CFJ), a “youth-powered” non-profit that pushes racial justice ideology on children, the Free Press reports.
Of that, $60,200 was allocated to pay 33 students and 10 families or parents $1,400 each to participate in CFJ’s training programs.
According to the contract, the program exists to “provide assistance to teachers, administrators and selected students in building strategies to support cultural understanding and change.”
On CFJ’s website, the group claims to have “trained hundreds of youth of color in Long Beach to be community leaders and organizers,” adding that it “provides leadership development opportunities throughout the school year and summer to ensure our youth leaders gain the political education and valuable organizing skills they need to lead social justice movements.”
“It’s so fun! You get paid good, you can have a fun time,” one of the students posted recently to Instagram.
A spokesman for the Long Beach School District framed the paid program as “internships” which are to ensure “equitable participation in CFJ programs, embracing diverse perspectives in education.” Quite diversity word salad there.

For the first time ever, In-N-Out closes one of its stores
In-N-out is closing its only Oakland location because of "ongoing issues with crime," the company said Tuesday.
While several locations have been relocated, the company has never closed a location in its 75-year history.
"We feel the frequency and severity of the crimes being encountered by our customers and associates leave us no alternative," Chief Operating Officer Denny Warnick said in a statement Tuesday.
The location near Oakland International Airport has been open for almost two decades and will officially shutter its doors March 24.
“Despite taking repeated steps to create safer conditions, our customers and associates are regularly victimized by car break-ins, property damage, theft and armed robberies,” Warnick said.
The restaurant “remains a busy and profitable” location, but In-N-Out’s top priority is its employees and customers, Warnick said.
"We cannot ask them to visit or work in an unsafe environment," Warnick said.
A host of businesses have closed in Oakland and cited crime as the reason, including a Raising Cane’s that closed its dining room in March, NBC Bay Area reported. Oakland police have increased patrols and cameras to help combat crime, according to the outlet.
All employees affected by the In-N-Out closure will be able to transfer to nearby In-N-Out locations or seek a severance package.

Democrats Spent $4 Million On Sexually Mutilating Prisoners
(Zerohedge) California is helping prison inmates cope with their stints, having forked over more than $4 million of taxpayer funds on surgical sex changes and cosmetic "gender-affirming" enhancements for 157 inmates, including four who are on death row, the Washington Free Beacon reports
Breaking it down, the state has coughed up:
Over $4 million for vaginoplasties
$180,000 for breast implants
$184,141 on facial feminization surgeries
$224,000 on laser hair removal
The state has spent over $1 million removing the breasts of female prisoners
"People who think they're transgender have rights, and they should be treated with dignity and respect, but it does not include taxpayer dollars being used to do surgeries that are experimental at best and scientifically unjustified at worst," said attorney Harmeet Dhillon, who has represented California inmates.
California's lack of guardrails for trans-identifying prisoners stands in sharp contrast to its rules around inmate dental care, for instance, which don't allow for root canals on back teeth, cosmetic tooth restoration or replacement, or treatment of oral ulcers—among other services.
From 2017 through mid-July 2023, taxpayers have bankrolled at least 157 transgender procedures and treatments, spending nearly $2.5 million on vaginoplasties—the creation of artificial vaginas and vulvas—for 35 male prisoners, according to previously unreported records obtained by women's prison advocate Amie Ichikawa and reviewed by the Free Beacon.
Four people on death row have received sex reassignment surgery.
Meanwhile, corrections officials have requested nearly $2.2 million in new funds just for transgender care, according to budget documents.

Marxist Democrats fund lawyers for illegal aliens
The sanctuary state of California will soon spend $4.5 million on providing free lawyers to illegal aliens working on farms thanks to a plan by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D).
Newsom announced the pilot program this week, which will see $4.5 million in state taxpayer money shifted to lawyers who are helping illegal alien farmworkers involved in labor investigations.
“This new program includes case review services, legal advice, and representation by an attorney – all at no cost to farmworkers seeking assistance,” a press release states of the pilot program.
In California, some half of farmworkers are illegal aliens. The pilot program to fund lawyers for those illegal aliens involved in farm labor investigations is only the latest initiative by Newsom to provide free legal services to illegal aliens.
Since 2015, for example, the sanctuary state has funneled millions to lawyers working for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that help illegal aliens fight their deportation cases.
“These initiatives help advance equity, inclusion, and a level playing field for both workers and law-abiding employers,” . . . . .

Democrats could seize kids from parents for not "respecting" pronouns
Under California’s Assembly Bill 957 by Assemblywoman Lori Wilson (D-Suisun City), a parent could lose custody for not “affirming” or agreeing to a child’s claims about gender identity.
The bill, co-authored by Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), would require judges adjudicating such disputes over transgender-identifying children to favor the parent who “affirms” the child’s preferred identity, the Free Beacon reported.
Apparently Senator Wiener is not satisfied eroding parental rights with his bill to allow children as young as age 12 to take the COVID-19 vaccine without parental consent. Or his bill relaxing the penalties for having “non-forcible sodomy, oral copulation, and sexual penetration with a minor.” Or his bill to remove the felony penalty for knowingly exposing another person to HIV.

Democrats want to empty L.A. jails to atone for "racism"
Los Angeles County Supervisors Hilda Solis and Lindsey Horvath have proposed a plan to “depopulate and decarcerate” county jails, releasing criminals to address what they call a “systemic racism” in criminal justice.
Solis, a former Democratic congresswoman and Secretary of Labor under President Barack Obama, and Horvath, a former mayor of West Hollywood who tried to bar President Donald Trump from the city, have proposed the plan, which will be voted on at the next Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday.
The plan states: “To depopulate and decarcerate is a monumental task, and the Board is committed to redress historical wrongs, deeply rooted in systemic racism and prejudice, and reverse status quo responses to poverty, mental health and medical needs, and substance use dependencies.” It calls for the Supervisors to declare a “humanitarian crisis” and to take steps to reduce the population of inmates through various kinds of releases.
Supervisor Kathryn Barger is the only Republican member of the board and is opposed to the new plan.

10.8 million Calif. ballots are “unaccounted for”
More than 10.8 million mail-in ballots went “unaccounted for” in California’s midterm elections last year, data published by the Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF) reveals.
In 2022, California election officials mailed out more than 22.1 million ballots to registered voters, the data published by PILF shows. Of those, more than 10.8 million went “unaccounted for” as researchers said election officials can only make assumptions as to what happened with the ballots.
“Typically, when a polling place opens and closes, there is an accounting of all election materials. Significant issues arise when incidents occur such as ballots disappearing at poll closing time. With mass mail elections, problems accumulate,” PILF researchers state:
After accounting for polling place votes and rejected ballots in November 2022, there were more than 10 million ballots left outstanding, meaning election officials do not know what happened to them. It is fair to assume that the bulk of these were ignored or ultimately thrown out by the intended recipients. But, under mass mail elections, we can only assume what happened. Mail voting practices have an insurmountable information gap. The public cannot know how many ballots were disregarded, delivered to wrong mailboxes, or even withheld from the proper recipient by someone at the same address. [Emphasis added]
