"It was a splendid population - for all the slow, sleepy, sluggish-brained sloths stayed at home - you never find that sort of people among pioneers - you cannot build pioneers out of that sort of material. It was that population that gave to California a name for getting up astounding enterprises and rushing them through with a magnificent dash and daring and a recklessness of cost or consequences, which she bears unto this day - and when she projects a new surprise the grave world smiles as usual and says, "Well, that is California all over."

Newsom's Gestapo Raid Hair Salon For Daring To Open

Führer Newsom Barks:

"How dare you try to feed your children"

Bravely putting their lives on the line to protect the public from hair stylists serving customers, police in Stockton, CA, raided Pomp Salon just before Christmas and ordered the place to close, as it been operating in defiance of Governor Newsom’s shutdown orders.

“About five armed state police officers burst into our salon shouting drop everything you’re doing. Stop, you’re being shut down,” salon co-owner Vicki Kirk told ABC 10 news.

The police were following orders from the California Department of Consumer Affairs, which apparently has law enforcement powers, and issued three misdemeanor citations to the salon through its Investigate Division.

Kirk tells FOX 40 news that “it was like a drug raid”:

“They burst into our salon and they treated it like a drug raid,” Kirk told FOX40.

The officers from the enforcement division of the Department of Consumer Affairs tried to cool tempers as shouting and expletives occurred.

The Board of Barbering and Cosmetology issued a statement that said violations of the emergency order could involve the removal of licenses from barbershops and salons.

“The Board strongly encourages licensees, as well as the public, to comply with the applicable Regional Stay-at-Home orders to slow the spread of COVID-19,” the statement read, in part.

But the owners of Pomp said salons are not spreading the virus and cited contact tracing numbers showing infection more much more likely to spread in businesses that are allowed to remain open.

“If there were any evidence that we should close, we would close, absolutely. There is virtually zero evidence to support the closure of our industry,” Ballin claimed.

“I just want to earn a living and we all want to do it safely,” Kirk said. “We have strict safety protocols here, and we will continue to do so.”

The couple said they believed they were singled out because they are outspoken critics of how lockdown rules are applied, citing health protocol violations by the governor and other officials.

The salon is thankful for the outpouring of support:

The San Joaquin County District Attorneys office has announced that they were not involved in this raid and will not proceed with charges against the salon, as these were state actors and not county or city officers.

Stockton has one of the highest rates of crime in the nation, and the city of just over 300,000 recently logged its 53rd shooting for the year. Nice to see the police focusing on the real crimes of salons opening.

Newsome rings up a $15,000 bar tab during the so-called "Pandemic"

“Don’t ever eat your bread without remembering the hardworking peasants!”
― Mehmet Murat ildan

(eeventonline.com)  -  Just when we think we’ve heard it all about California Warden Gov. Gavin Newsom’s “ill-advised” outing to The French Laundry a few weeks ago, well, we haven’t. For people who aren’t familiar with Napa, for all intents and purposes the entire county is one small town (my family first settled in that area in the 1890’s, though they all moved south about 40 years later).

The locals all know each other, and don’t always have the best impression of the outsiders who jet in for the weekend to take advantage of the “quaint” lifestyle. Think of it as the Hamptons of the West Coast.

When weekenders who happen to be a little famous are rude and dismissive to the locals, whether a chef or a shop owner or even the lowly wait staff or hotel janitors, all of the locals know about it. When the weekender happens to be the Governor, and he’s out dining with a large party of lobbyists and special interest group execs in the middle of a pandemic, breaking his own rules, then lies about it when he’s caught, well, there’s no way that all of the details don’t eventually come out.

After photos of the dinner were released last week, other attendees – including two executives from the California Medical Association – were quickly identified.

The (very) occasional voice of reason among Democrats in California, San Francisco’s Willie Brown, took Newsom to task in his weekly San Francisco Chronicle column on Saturday, with his last line being the chef’s kiss, if you will (emphasis added):

I’M NOT SURE WHICH IS THE BIGGER “STORY,” NEWSOM BREAKING HIS OWN RULES OR LAUGHING IT UP WITH HIGH-TICKET LOBBYISTS IN ONE OF THE MOST WELL-KNOWN AND EXPENSIVE RESTAURANTS IN THE COUNTRY.

AND BY THE WAY, I HEAR THE WINE BILL WAS $12,000.

Whoa. Whoa!

If there were eight people there, or even 10, that’s more than $1,000 of wine per person. Just how did these people get home? We know Newsom said he arrived late and that he drove there.

On Monday journalist Adam Housley, who hails from Yountville, where The French Laundry is located, had a few more things to say about the wine bill, the number of attendees, and whether the party was held indoors or outdoors.

A “total restaurant apocalypse”
Marxist Democrats don't give a shit about workers and business owners trying to feed their children

The San Francisco Chronicle is predicting a “total restaurant apocalypse” in the San Francisco Bay Area as a result of the region’s new coronavirus shutdown orders, forcing thousands of business to close and lay off employees in the near future.

The San Francisco region will be under stay-at-home orders for several weeks, into the new year. Much of the rest of California is also under stay-at-home orders by Gov. Gavin Newsom, though — for now — those orders will expire by year’s end.

Soleil Ho, the paper’s restaurant critic, warned Monday that while the economic devastation was not “inevitable,” it was almost certain, as restaurants that invested tens of thousands of dollars in outdoor dining would struggle to recoup their costs:

Outdoor dining has been paused in many Bay Area counties, including San Francisco and Alameda counties — a logical health policy step but a punch in the stomach for the restaurant industry. Restaurants have plunked down tens of thousands of dollars on outdoor dining structures and heat lamps and rehired staff to make an impossible situation work.

Restaurant workers will likely be laid off en masse again, just in time for the Dec. 31 expiration of emergency federal unemployment aid, and restaurant owners have told me that they’re wracked with guilt over the possibility of cutting people loose in the midst of a worsening pandemic. Everyone has bills to pay and mouths to feed, and life can only get harder from here. Without meaningful aid to help the country survive this next lockdown, this is bad news for restaurants, but, above all, awful news for people.

Los Angeles County has decided to shut down all dining at restaurants, bars and breweries for at least the next three weeks.

Los Angeles County has decided to shut down all dining at restaurants, breweries, bars and wineries beginning on Wednesday. The ban is set to last for the next three weeks.

The county decided to shut down dining because of the recent surge in COVID-19 cases.

“To reduce the possibility for crowding and the potential for exposures in settings where people are not wearing their face coverings, restaurants, breweries, wineries and bars will only be able to offer take-out, drive thru, and delivery services,” the county’s Department of Public Health said in a news release. “Wineries and breweries may continue their retail operations adhering to current protocols. In person dining will not be allowed, at minimum, for the next 3 weeks.”

94% of California Locked Down

Marxist Democrats Demand You Live in Poverty

(Daily Mail)  -  On Monday Gov. Gavin Newsom announced California is hitting its 'emergency brake' and will shut down indoor activities for 94 percent of the state, as he apologized for attending a dinner party at a Michelin-starred restaurant earlier this month.

In a coronavirus press conference on Monday Newsom said the state's number of COVID-19 cases has doubled in the past week alone and 10,968 new cases were reported on Monday.

Newsom announced 41 of California’s 58 counties will move into the state’s most restrictive purple COVID-19 reopening risk tier starting Tuesday, up from 13 counties last week.

Under the purple tier indoor operations for museums, houses of worship, gyms and restaurants are not allowed. Bars that don’t provide food, concert venues, schools, and theme parks are also closed.

Counties going under the purple tier include Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, Napa and Solano counties in the Bay Area as well as Los Angeles.

Now Democrats Ban Mark Twain

“'Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. '”

George Orwell, 1984

(KNX)  -  A debate is brewing about teaching anti-racism in the Burbank Unified School District, with a handful of classic books being removed from intstruction.

Teachers have been told to stop using the books such as Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” until further notice.

The novels are under review after being challenged by some parents over concerns about racial content.

Nora Pelizzari with the National Coalition Against Censorship says the books in question tell anti-racist stories.

The organization has written a letter urging the district to keep the books in their curriculum and allow teachers to teach them during the review process…

The other novels included in the potential banning are “Of Mice and Men,” “The Cay,” and “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry”.

Pabst Blue Ribbon flees California for Texas

Bye Bye Jobs

SAN ANTONIO – Pabst Blue Ribbon has chosen downtown San Antonio over busy Los Angeles for its headquarters.

The San Antonio Economic Development Foundation (SAEDF) confirmed Thursday PBR is moving its headquarters from LA to its Houston Street location.

PBR has operated in San Antonio for years, with about 60 or so employees, according to the SAEDF.

The headquarters are looking to hire up to 25 extra employees in the next few months and is expected to have more than 115 once fully staffed.

Currently, we’re told the company is in the Rand Building and is hiring.

The San Antonio Economic Development Foundation provided us with the following statement.

“San Antonio is ideal for headquarters. We have a culture and economy where professionals have a unique opportunity to build wealth and actually enjoy it, making San Antonio a very attractive city to live in. Pabst's 2019 move to The Rand reflects the company’s affection for downtown San Antonio’s creative energy and speaks volumes about our creative and collaborative business culture—it sends the message that our region is where companies need to be.”

Newsom unemployment claims backlogged until January

(NBC)  -  California embattled unemployment benefits agency said Wednesday it has cleared about 246,000 of its more than 1.6 million backlogged claims following a two-week “reset” where it stopped taking new applications so it could improve its technology.

But the agency said it would be January before it clears the backlog, frustrating state lawmakers who questioned the agency's director during a legislative hearing on Wednesday. Sharon Hilliard, executive director of the Employment Development Department, said some people have been waiting as long as five months to get benefits.

“To be honest it’s very hard for us to tell our constituents that we have 100 percent certainty that this will be resolved in the next couple of months given the track record,” said Assemblyman David Chiu, a Democrat from San Francisco.

Hilliard said it will take that long to clear the backlog because “the work is very complex and complicated.”

San Francisco Rents Crash Most On Record Amid Mass Exodus

(Zerohedge)  -  A new report confirms what we've been talking about since the early days (read: here) of the virus pandemic, that is, an exodus out of major cities.

According to real estate analytics company Zumper, the exodus, out of San Francisco has been so great, that the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment collapsed more than 20% in September from a year ago to $2,830. Month over month, September rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the city fell by 7%.

Referring to the plunge in rent prices in San Francisco, Zumper said:

"Not only is this drop among the largest yearly decreases Zumper has ever recorded in our history of tracking rental prices, but it was also the first time the median 1-bed price in San Francisco was priced below $3000. These combined trends show just how drastically the market has changed in the nation's most expensive city to rent."

Zumper CEO Anthemos Georgiades, who was quoted by CNBC, said a flood of supply is hitting the market:

"Some renters may be inclined to move to the suburbs to get more space, as the Covid-19 pandemic spurred companies to close offices and allow employees to work from home. Facebook and Google, for example, have told employees they can work remotely at least through next summer," Georgiades said.

The virus-induced downturn, resulting in the collapse of small businesses citywide, the decimation of low-income households, and high-unemployment, is forcing many folks across the metro area to downsize or move to less expensive areas. He said wildfires and hazardous air conditions were some other reasons for "tipping the balance about their medium-term location choices."

Social unrest and the rise of violent crime have made many folks uncomfortable about raising a family in the dangerous metro area. Many are moving to rural communities of the Bay Area, from Marin County to Napa wine country and south to Monterey's Carmel Valley.

Georgiades said it could take years for San Francisco real estate to heal from its pandemic wounds

26% of new unemployment claims are from California

Newsome Drags California To Hell

(Houston Chronicle)  -  Another 870,000 Americans sought new unemployment benefits last week, as the pandemic’s economic impacts continued to spread pain.

More than 230,000 claims were in California, which now has stopped accepting new applications for two weeks while it revamps a struggling benefits system — a change that is likely to temporarily skew the state’s job-loss numbers.

Besides regular claims, 630,080 people applied for new pandemic benefits for self-employed people, including 99,824 in California, according to data released Thursday by the Department of Labor.

California claims for the week accounted for more than a quarter of the national totals — far beyond the state’s 12% share of the U.S. population, which economists attribute to the state’s early and prolonged shutdown, as well as its heavy reliance on travel and tourism.

California has 1.6 million pending claims that it will not resolve until late January, according to the report, which said the backlog is now growing by 10,000 claims a day.

“EDD has failed the people it serves in almost every imaginable way,” said Assemblymember David Chiu, D-San Francisco, in a statement.

Democrat Created Unemployment Claims Spike Up

Marxist Democrats Demand You Live in Poverty

(Sacramento Bee)  Randy Karr isn’t sure how soon he’ll be able to reopen the doors at California Family Fitness. All he knows is that being forced to operate a health club chain outdoors — under tents, in parking lots — has made his business suffer.

The same goes for his employees, too: 1,000 of the Orangevale chain’s 1,100 employees remain furloughed as Karr struggles to navigate Gov. Gavin Newsom’s sometimes-confusing guidelines for reopening the California economy.

“There’s just so many inconsistencies,” Karr said.

Labor Day weekend found California’s job market still at the mercy of COVID-19. The state’s economy remains mired in double-digit unemployment more than six months after the coronavirus pandemic prompted the first stay-at-home orders and wiped out millions of jobs.

Even as the national economy shows fresh signs of improvement, Californians are still heading to the unemployment rolls in alarming numbers.

On Thursday, the federal Labor Department reported that 236,784 Californians filed initial claims for unemployment benefits during the week ending Aug. 29. That compared to 196,916 new claims in California the week before.

. . . . layoffs are still occurring as a result of Newsom’s mid-July decision to roll back much of the reopening of the economy during a worrisome spike in COVID-19 infections. Health clubs were among those businesses that could no longer operate indoors.

“The main factor is the renewed lockdown,” Bernick said.

Gavin Newsom is Insane

The Tyrant Newsom
Turns California into Venezuela

(MSN) - California has embarked on a new tiered plan for reopening businesses that has some crying foul.

Critics say the system doesn't take into account that some businesses can operate safely even in counties with relatively high numbers of COVID-cases. And it hits some businesses harder than others, even when it appears they perform similar services.

"While certain businesses are allowed to open ... many others continue to be greatly limited, hampered or even closed," said San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond, who held a news conference on the issue Monday. "The state continues to change the targets and move the goal posts."

Gyms remain closed in the most restrictive category, but smaller operations could operate safely and enforce social distancing, Desmond said. Legoland, classified as a theme park, must stay shut while 30 miles south, SeaWorld San Diego can reopen under the "Zoos and Museums" category. It began hosting its "Zoo Days" last weekend.

Then there is the issue of manicurists, who still can't work indoors, while hair salons can.

"It makes no sense to us," said Mike Vo, board chairman of the Pro Nails Association, an industry group.

The new guidelines, announced late last week by Gov. Gavin Newsom, create a four-tier, color-coded system based on the rates of coronavirus cases in each of California's 58 counties.

Counties in most of the state, including metropolitan Los Angeles and part of the San Francisco Bay Area, remain in the most severe category. Counties aren't allowed to move to a less restrictive tier for 21 days, to make sure their COVID-19 case trend isn't worsening.

Visalia Vice Mayor Steve Nelsen said customers should be able to decide whether there is a risk of contracting the coronavirus.

“As an individual, I can decide whether I feel safe to enter or not,” he said.

To some, the state's guidelines look arbitrary, unrelated to the degree of risk. Some casinos on tribal land have reopened with precautions such as mask requirements and plastic partitions, while those fully under state or local jurisdiction remain closed.

"I think it's devastating," said Kyle Kirkland, president of the California Gaming Association. "The governor's office looks like they are playing with colors."

Los Angeles still wasn't permitting indoor hair cutting.

"It’s absolutely horrifying," said Dani Lyn, owner of Trim a salon in the Studio City section of Los Angeles. "They allow you to open to cut hair, but not in L.A. County."

But it's a race against time. She said the salon is thousands of dollars behind on rent, and with the state's requirement of 21 days to move to the next category, it's a matter of trying to hang on.
