The Long Beach Unified School district in California is funneling money to a progressive activist group which is paying students $1,400 each to become racial and social justice warriors.

The district paid $900,000 for a one-year contract to Californians for Justice (CFJ), a “youth-powered” non-profit that pushes racial justice ideology on children, the Free Press reports.

Of that, $60,200 was allocated to pay 33 students and 10 families or parents $1,400 each to participate in CFJ’s training programs.

According to the contract, the program exists to “provide assistance to teachers, administrators and selected students in building strategies to support cultural understanding and change.”

On CFJ’s website, the group claims to have “trained hundreds of youth of color in Long Beach to be community leaders and organizers,” adding that it “provides leadership development opportunities throughout the school year and summer to ensure our youth leaders gain the political education and valuable organizing skills they need to lead social justice movements.”

“It’s so fun! You get paid good, you can have a fun time,” one of the students posted recently to Instagram.

A spokesman for the Long Beach School District framed the paid program as “internships” which are to ensure “equitable participation in CFJ programs, embracing diverse perspectives in education.” Quite diversity word salad there.

California is the first state in the country that will require schoolchildren to get vaccinated against COVID-19, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Friday.

The mandate will apply to all who receive in-person instruction, Newsom said, and will begin in the first school term that follows full authorization of a COVID-19 vaccine for children by the US Food and Drug Administration - either in January 1 or July 1, 2022.

The first phase will apply to children in grades 7 through 12, after which the requirement will extend to those entering kindergarten.

In August, the FDA issued a full authorization for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, approving its use for all ages 12 and above. It is expected to authorize the vaccine for children over the age of 5 before the end of the year.

The Calfiornia State University system, which includes Humboldt State, will require faculty, staff and students who are accessing campuses to be vaccinated for COVID-19.

Back in February, HSU announced the campus and others in the system would implement the requirement once the FDA granted full approval to one or more of the three current options, but today's release states the requirement is being announced now because of  "evolving circumstances" as Humboldt County, the state and the nation experience a rapid spike in cases and hospitalizations.

“The current surge in COVID cases due to the spread of the highly infectious Delta variant is an alarming new factor that we must consider as we look to maintain the health and well-being of students, employees and visitors to our campuses this fall,” CSU Chancellor Joseph I. Castro states in the release. “Receiving a COVID vaccine continues to be the best way to mitigate the spread of the virus. We urge all members of the CSU community to get vaccinated as soon as possible, and announcing this requirement now allows members of the CSU community to receive multiple doses of a vaccine as we head into the beginning of the fall term.”

The California Department of Public Health said Friday children will be required to wear masks in school despite the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention releasing new guidelines saying face coverings aren't necessary if certain precautions are taken.

This isn't the first time the state hasn't aligned directly with the federal government. When the CDC relaxed its masking guidelines in May to allow vaccinated individuals to generally skip masking in most situations, the Golden State waited a month to adopt the guidelines.

California's decision around schools comes as districts across the state prepare to open next month for full-time learning and the state continues to encourage residents, including kids as young as 12 years old, to get vaccinated.

(KNX)  -  A debate is brewing about teaching anti-racism in the Burbank Unified School District, with a handful of classic books being removed from intstruction.

Teachers have been told to stop using the books such as Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” until further notice.

The novels are under review after being challenged by some parents over concerns about racial content.

Nora Pelizzari with the National Coalition Against Censorship says the books in question tell anti-racist stories.

The organization has written a letter urging the district to keep the books in their curriculum and allow teachers to teach them during the review process…

The other novels included in the potential banning are “Of Mice and Men,” “The Cay,” and “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry”.

REEDLEY, Calif. -- Officials in a Central California county issued a health officer order to shut down a private school after administrators chose to bring kids on campus Thursday for the first day of school, violating state emergency orders in the process.

The first day of classes at Immanuel Schools in Reedley looked a lot like every prior back-to-school day.

COVID-19 has infected more than 18,000 people in Fresno County, and because of the pandemic, no schools in this county are allowed to open for in-person instruction.

Fresno County public health officials said they'll give Immanuel a chance to comply with the state order, even though they already warned administrators not to open.

However, if the school refuses to return to remote learning, the county intends to get a court order to shut it down.

Right now, that's the direction it appears to be heading.

Administrators didn't return calls Thursday, but they posted a statement on Facebook.

It said, in part, "As we believe these orders are unconstitutional, we are working with legal counsel and other Christ-centered and private schools to file a lawsuit to address these orders."

Applicants looking to teach mathematics at the University of California campuses are evaluated based on their past contributions to “diversity.”

According to the current job postings for these positions, applications must include a “diversity statement” detailing the applicants’ “past and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion.”

Several listings for tenure-track or tenured mathematics professor positions at University of California campuses included the stipulation, including listings for positions at UCLA, UC San Diego, and UC Irvine. 

The University of California San Diego offers applicants a detailed explanation of how to construct such a statement, noting that the document should be one to two pages, and encouraging applicants “to provide specific information on the motivation, duration, and impact of their outreach and mentoring activities.”

“The purpose of the statement is to identify candidates who have the professional skills, experience, and/or willingness to engage in activities that will advance our campus equity, diversity and inclusion goals,” the university explains.

A detailed explanation of the evaluation process for these statements is also available from UCSD.  This document notes the purpose of the diversity statement as a method of evaluating a candidate’s “awareness of the barriers that exist for groups historically under-represented in math and science, “past efforts in diversity and outreach activities; and “future plans for diversity and outreach activities.”

The university notes that of these considerations, “past efforts are given far greater weight than merely showing awareness of barriers or stating future plans.”

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A measure that would make California the first state to require all public universities to offer abortion medication at their campus health centers cleared a hurdle Wednesday.

None of the 34 University of California or California State University campuses currently offer abortion services. The California Assembly approved the measure, which returns to the Senate for a final sign-off.

Private donors have agreed to pay millions of dollars in startup costs including ultrasound machines, staff training and the creation of a 24-hour hotline for questions and emergency referrals. Universities would be required to offer the service by 2022.

Medication that instigates an abortion can be administered up to 10 weeks into a pregnancy. One medication is administered in the clinic and a patient is given a second drug to take later at home.

The medications induce bleeding similar to a miscarriage, according to legislative records.

Abortion rights advocates say it can be difficult and expensive for women to seek abortions off campus, and time is of the essence because medications can only be used early in a pregnancy.

"Today, California took another historic step towards ensuring that the students who have made the decision to end a pregnancy have the support and resources they need," Surina Khan, CEO of The Women's Foundation of California, said in a statement.

(Sacramento Bee)  -  Chuck Collins, a researcher for a progressive Washington, D.C., think tank, recently wrote a ringing endorsement of a proposed 2020 ballot measure that would impose a state-level estate tax to pay for free college for all Californians (“One way to offer free college: Restore the state estate tax,” Viewpoints, June 13).

Collins apparently doesn’t realize, or doesn’t care, that this $4 billion-a-year proposal would create financial hardships for family businesses and farms that often result in liquidation and loss of jobs.

Family businesses are the bedrock of their communities and the economy. A recent study showed that the state’s 1.4 million small businesses employ 7 million people. They tend to pay their employees more, train them better and provide more generous benefits than non-family companies. They’re also less likely to significantly downsize during tough economic times.

Because families are in it for the long term, they focus not just on the next fiscal quarter but the next quarter-century. And because they’re based in their communities, they donate time and money for local organizations and projects.

But keeping businesses family-owned is a struggle. Only about 30 percent survive into the second generation, about 12 percent into the third generation and just 3 percent operate in the fourth generation and beyond.

To help family businesses pass from one generation to the next, four states have repealed their estate taxes since 2010. Fortunately, two initiatives passed by voters in 1982 prohibit an estate tax in California, and that can only be changed by the voters.

The Family Business Association of California vigorously opposes a “death tax” for California and leads a coalition of 40 associations against the flawed concept. To quote Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman in a letter that’s been signed by more than 700 other economists: “It is a bad message and a bad tax. Death shouldn’t be a taxable event.”

(KCBS) – In an effort to attract more people to teaching and keep educators in the profession, a California State Senate proposal would make teachers exempt from the state income tax. 

If Senate Bill 807 is approved, teachers would have to stay on the job for five years to qualify for the state tax exemption.

SB807 would also provide a tax deduction for the cost of attaining a teaching credential.

The legislature has not yet calculated the estimated loss in tax revenue to the state if the measure is approved.

California is struggling to recruit and retain teachers as baby boomers retire and meager starting salaries do little to attract young people to the profession.

According to the California Teachers Association, nearly one in three teachers leave the profession in the first seven years.

(Breitbart California)  -  The Lt. Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, has released a statement offering lukewarm condemnation of the riots that prevented MILO’s final event of the “Dangerous Faggot Tour,” whilst smearing him as a “white supremacist.”

Newsom, who has launched a campaign for Governor of California in 2018, said in a statement that people experienced “both extremes at UC Berkeley’s campus last night, from the racism and misogyny of fly-by-night provocateur and white supremacist Milo Yiannopoulos, to the excessive response of a few protestors.”

The event was cancelled after left-wing rioters, who the university claim were not students, smashed ATMs and bank windows, looted a Starbucks, beat Trump supporters, pepper sprayed innocent individuals, set fires in the street, and sprayed the words “Kill Trump” on storefronts.

He then went on to attack President Donald Trump, who yesterday condemned the protests whilst threatening to cut university’s $350 million of federal funding, over half its budget.

“President Trump’s asinine threat to pull funding from Cal showed zero awareness of the real-world implications of a President’s words and actions. Stripping federal funds from UC would only create more innocent victims and more Trump carnage,” he said.

“President Trump is quick to attack American students, immigrants, women, the LGBT community, journalists, and our international allies but he is either too weak or too ignorant to stand up to white supremacists and others who spew hatred. That’s why the President and his extremist acolytes like Yiannopoulos need to hear from the resistance, loudly and repeatedly. The arrangement comes roughly nine months after the university’s Black Student Union issued a set of demands in response to what its members contend are frequent “racist attacks” on campus, such as “racially insensitive remarks” and “microaggressions” by professors and students. One demand was for a “CSLA housing space delegated for Black students.”

“[It] would provide a cheaper alternative housing solution for Black students. This space would also serve as a safe space for Black CSLA students to congregate, connect, and learn from each other,” the demand letter stated.

The newly debuted Halisi Scholars Black Living-Learning Community “focuses on academic excellence and learning experiences that are inclusive and non-discriminatory,” Cal State LA spokesman Robert Lopez told The College Fix via email.

The public university has 192 furnished apartments in a residential complex on campus, and the Halisi community will be located there, Lopez said, adding it joins other themed living-learning communities already housed there.

Lopez declined to answer any additional questions or provide more details on the new community, such as how many rooms it encompasses, and whether it’s a whole floor or just a few rooms.

Cal State LA joins UConn, UC Davis and Berkeley in offering segregated housing dedicated to black students. While these housing options are technically open to all students, they’re billed and used as arrangements in which black students can live with one another.

ISIS inspired California student in campus stabbings

FRESNO, Calif. (CBS News) -- A California college student who went on a stabbing rampage that wounded four people before he was shot down by a campus police officer was inspired by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) but acted alone, the FBI said Thursday.

Faisal Mohammad, 18, appears to have become self-radicalized, drawing motivation from terrorist propaganda that he found online before launching the Nov. 4 attack at the University of California, Merced, authorities said.

"Every indication is that Mohammad acted on his own," Gina Swankie, a spokeswoman for the FBI's Sacramento field office, said in a statement. "It may never be possible to definitively determine why he chose to attack people on the U.C. Merced Campus."

The knife attack happened a month before a gun-wielding husband-and-wife team in San Bernardino killed 14 people and wounded 21 others at a workplace holiday party. In that case, too, investigators said they were influenced by ISIS, but not directly connected to it. Like Mohammad, they had not raised red flags that put them on a watch list.

In both cases family members said they were unaware of their loved ones' interests in terrorists groups.

In Merced, Mohammad burst into a classroom, stabbing two students. He stabbed a construction worker who intervened, then ran from the building, where he knifed a school employee sitting on a bench. Police shot and killed Mohammad.

The FBI says the college freshman from Santa Clara, California, had visited the websites of ISIS and other extremist groups for several weeks. He planned the attack at least a week before carrying it out, investigators said.

During the rampage, Mohammad carried a backpack containing a two-page, hand-written "manifesto," detailing plans to bind students to their desks with zip-tie handcuffs, authorities have said. Then, he was going to make a fake 911 distress call, ambush responding officers with a hunting knife and steal their guns to shoot a list of targeted classmates.

Mohammad's backpack also held a photocopy of an ISIS flag and a list of items he would need for the attack, the FBI said.

(Reuters)  -  The University of California system said on Friday it will drop its roughly $30 million worth of investments in private prison companies following demands from a black student group.

The decision comes amid a wave of student protests against racism at college campuses across the country as well as the Black Lives Matter civil rights movement against the U.S. criminal justice system, which disproportionately impacts black people.

The UC system's chief investment officer, Jagdeep Singh Bachher, made the decision after meeting with students of the Afrikan Black Coalition, university spokeswoman Dianne Klein said.

Klein said the UC system has a policy against "blanket divestment," but made the decision after further review.

"This made sense given our conclusion that, based on risk over the next several years, these holdings were not a good investment for a long-term investor such as UC," Klein said.

Klein said the amount invested was less than $30 million, a tiny fraction of the UC system's $100 billion investment portfolio. Klein said she did not know exactly which private prison companies the system held shares in or exactly how much money was invested.

The coalition, a California-wide student group, said the UC system had $25 million invested in Corrections Corporation of America and The Geo Group.

(San Jose Mercury News)  -  Upending a hallmark of California school reform, Gov. Jerry Brown on Wednesday signed a bill that will award diplomas to thousands of young people who failed the California High School Exit Exam in the past decade.

The new law, which takes effect in January, will allow former high school students who failed the test as far back as 2004 to now graduate, as long as they passed all of their required high school classes. The new law effectively undoes the decade-old requirement, imposed after a hard and bitter fight, that students pass a standardized exam in order to earn a high school diploma in California.

SB 172 by Sen. Carol Liu, D-La Cañada Flintridge, also suspends the exam as a graduation requirement for current freshmen, sophomores and juniors. It passed the Legislature on a partisan vote, with Republicans objecting.

Follow the Money
Test taking is all about getting more government tax dollars, not education.

But it is a phony bullshit system. By the very nature of statistics 49% of
those taking any test will always fall below the "average".

The exam "never had the coherence we need in a state accountability system," said Chris Funk, superintendent of the East Side Union High School District in San Jose. "I'm happy that it was dropped."

But the bill was divisive.

"I'm very sorry and disappointed to hear the governor signed it," said Assemblywoman Catharine Baker, R-San Ramon. "Removing the exit exam not only impairs our ability to ensure we have taught our kids, but impairs our ability to hold our education system accountable for that responsibility."

But some of those who pushed hard for establishing a statewide exit exam weren't sorry to see it go. "It may make sense," said Ryan Smith, executive of the Oakland-based Education Trust-West, which backed the legislation embedding the exit exam as a graduation requirement. He noted that students who've failed the exam can't retake it now, because it doesn't exist. The state Department of Education ceased offering the exit exam last spring.

It is uncertain exactly how many young people the bill will make eligible for a high school diploma. The California Department of Education does not keep records of those passing the exit exam after they finish high school -- students may keep trying to pass while in community college or adult school. But from the Class of 2006 through the Class of 2014, the CDE records show, 32,000 failed to pass the exam while in high school. Some of those passed later.

For the rest, school districts now will be required to award a diploma to those who completed 12th grade in 2004 or later, and who met all other graduation requirements.

Even years after leaving high school, a diploma matters. It's required to attend four-year universities, receive financial aid, enlist in the military or join apprenticeship programs.
