Newsom gets full pay while driving people bankrupt

(NY POST)  -  California Gov. Gavin Newsom failed to take a promised pay cut after slashing state workers’ wages has reportedly failed to take the ten percent pay cut he promised to give himself after ordering reductions in state workers’ salaries due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Newsom had pledged to reduce his governor’s salary by the same amount he was slashing salaries of state workers — 10 percent — back in May when he laid out sweeping reductions in spending.

While most government workers were handed smaller paychecks beginning last month, Newsom still received his full monthly salary of $17,479., the Sacramento Bee first reported.

Newsom’s spokesman, Nathan Click, told the Bee that Newsom was only issued his full paycheck because of an oversight.

The Bee found State Controller Betty Yee to be the only one of the state’s eight elected constitutional officers to take a pay cut last month.

Since the Bee’s reporting, most other constitutional officers have followed suit in requesting their pay reductions at the urging of the governor’s office, the paper reported.

REEDLEY, Calif. -- Officials in a Central California county issued a health officer order to shut down a private school after administrators chose to bring kids on campus Thursday for the first day of school, violating state emergency orders in the process.

The first day of classes at Immanuel Schools in Reedley looked a lot like every prior back-to-school day.

COVID-19 has infected more than 18,000 people in Fresno County, and because of the pandemic, no schools in this county are allowed to open for in-person instruction.

Fresno County public health officials said they'll give Immanuel a chance to comply with the state order, even though they already warned administrators not to open.

However, if the school refuses to return to remote learning, the county intends to get a court order to shut it down.

Right now, that's the direction it appears to be heading.

Administrators didn't return calls Thursday, but they posted a statement on Facebook.

It said, in part, "As we believe these orders are unconstitutional, we are working with legal counsel and other Christ-centered and private schools to file a lawsuit to address these orders."

A 54% Marxist Tax Rate Proposed By Democrats

(CNBC)  -  A proposal to raise taxes on California millionaires would result in a top tax rate of nearly 54% for federal and state taxes.

Democrats in the California state legislature this week proposed a tax hike on the state’s highest earners to help pay for schools and services hurt by the coronavirus pandemic. Legislators say the tax hike would raise more than $6 billion a year, and would redirect funding from the wealthy to those who have been hit hardest by the Covid-19 crisis.

The plan follows proposals in New York state to raise taxes on the wealthy to pay for a widening budget deficit. And it adds to a growing debate over expanding inequality during the pandemic and who should pay the soaring costs to government.

Yet the California proposal would raise the highest state tax rate in the country even higher, and renew the possibility of wealthy Californians fleeing the state.

California’s top marginal tax rate is 13.3%. The new proposal would add three new surcharges on seven-figure earners. It would add a 1% surcharge to gross income of more than $1 million, 3% on income over $2 million and 3.5% on income above $5 million.

So the top tax rate would be 16.8%, on income of more than $5 million and the combined state and federal tax rate for California’s top earners would soar to 53.8%. With the deduction on state and local taxes capped at $10,000 under the Trump tax cuts, the top-earning Californians wouldn’t be able to deduct the new taxes from their federal returns.
