Marxist Democrats fund lawyers for illegal aliens

The sanctuary state of California will soon spend $4.5 million on providing free lawyers to illegal aliens working on farms thanks to a plan by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D).

Newsom announced the pilot program this week, which will see $4.5 million in state taxpayer money shifted to lawyers who are helping illegal alien farmworkers involved in labor investigations.

“This new program includes case review services, legal advice, and representation by an attorney – all at no cost to farmworkers seeking assistance,” a press release states of the pilot program.

In California, some half of farmworkers are illegal aliens. The pilot program to fund lawyers for those illegal aliens involved in farm labor investigations is only the latest initiative by Newsom to provide free legal services to illegal aliens.

Since 2015, for example, the sanctuary state has funneled millions to lawyers working for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that help illegal aliens fight their deportation cases.

During the 2019 legislative session, California continued to pass many new laws to “normalize” illegal aliens and give them expanded rights and protections.  Governor Gavin Newsom (D) signed these measures that were vetoed by his predecessor, former Governor Jerry Brown (D), for being too extreme.

• Senate Bill 225 allows illegal aliens to hold any “appointed civil office” and to “receive any form of compensation that the person is not otherwise prohibited from receiving pursuant to federal law.” A nearly identical bill was vetoed last year by former Gov. Brown.
   
• Assembly Bill 668 attempts to lock Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) out of state courthouses. This legislation was also previously vetoed by Gov. Brown.
   
• Senate Bill 104 expands the health benefits to illegal aliens by making aliens aged 19-25 eligible for Medi-Cal, the state’s Medicaid program. Illegal aliens 18-years old and younger were already eligible.
   
• Assembly Bill 1645 requires the California Community Colleges and the California State University to designate a Dreamer Resource Liaison on each of their respective campuses to help illegal alien and other immigrant students obtain financial aid and other resources such as social and legal services.
   
• Assembly Bill 32 bans private prisons, the majority which contract with ICE to hold illegal aliens while their cases go through immigration court. 
   
• Assembly Bill  1747 restricts the use of the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS) for immigration enforcement.

President Trump has noted that “in California … [t]hey don’t treat their people as well as they treat illegal immigrants.”  Former Acting ICE Director Tom Homan condemned the Golden State for “effectively making the absurd claim that it has the power to ignore federal law.” He added “California lawmakers would do well to remember that California is part of the United States.  Unless the state secedes and becomes an independent nation, it has to obey the same laws as the rest of our country.”      www.fairus.org

(KGTV) - Gov. Gavin Newsom’s budget proposal includes a plan to set aside funding for San Diego-based nonprofit groups and other community organizations that are helping migrant families as they arrive at California’s border.

According to the Los Angeles Times , the governor’s plan calls for $20 million to be allocated to migrant services and immigration rapid response programs. If approved, the funding would begin July 2019 and continue for the next three years.

Additionally, Newsom is asking that $5 million be available to address immigration-related emergencies that may occur during the 2018-19 fiscal year.

The LA Times reported a good percentage of the state funding would go to San Diego groups -- collectively known as the San Diego Rapid Response Network -- that provide aid and shelter for asylum-seeking migrants that are allowed legal entry into the U.S. but are then released into the community as they await asylum proceedings.

Many local groups have asked for more help in recent weeks, as thousands of migrants make their way to the border to seek asylum in the U.S.

Earlier this month, the groups’ leaders took the issue directly to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, and the board voted in favor of putting a plan in place to address the problem.

The governor’s budget proposal also includes a $260 million expansion of Medi-Cal that would provide health coverage for migrants who are young adults and lack legal status in the U.S.

(ABC News)  -  . . . . . have prompted California lawmakers to consider proposals that would make the state the first in the nation to offer government-funded health care to adult immigrants living in the country illegally. But the decision on who to cover may come down to cost. 

Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom wants to spend about $98 million per year to cover low-income immigrants between the ages of 19 and 25 who are living in the country illegally. 

The state Assembly has a bill that would cover all immigrants in California living in the country illegally over the age of 19. But Newsom has balked at that plan because of its estimated $3.4 billion price. 

"There's 3.4 billion reasons why it is a challenge," he said. 

The state Senate wants to cover adults ages 19 to 25, plus seniors 65 and older. That bill's sponsor, Sen. Maria Elana Durazo, scoffed at cost concerns, noting the state has a projected $21.5 billion budget surplus. 

"When we have, you know, a good budget, then what's the reason for not addressing it?" she said. 

The Senate and Assembly will finalize their budget proposals this week before beginning negotiations with the governor. State law says a budget has to be passed by June 15 or lawmakers forfeit their pay. 

At stake, according to legislative staffers, are the 3 million people left in California who don't have health insurance. About 1.8 million of them are immigrants in the country illegally. Of those, about 1.26 million have incomes low enough to qualify them for the Medi-Cal program. 

"Symbolically, this is quite significant. This would be establishing California as a counter to federal policies, both around health care and immigration," said Larry Levitt, senior vice president for health reform at the Kaiser Family Foundation. 

If enacted, it could prompt yet another collision with the Trump administration, which has proposed a rule that could hinder immigrants' residency applications if they rely on public assistance programs such as Medicaid. 

The proposed rule from the Department of Homeland Security says the goal is to make sure "foreign nationals do not become dependent on public benefits for support." 

California is also considering a measure requiring everyone in the state to purchase health insurance. People who refuse would have to pay a penalty, and the money would go toward helping middle-income residents purchase private health insurance plans. 

"We're going to penalize the citizens of this state that have followed the rules, but we're going to let somebody who has not followed the rules come in here and get the services for free. I just think that's wrong," Republican state Sen. Jeff Stone said about coverage of people in the U.S. illegally. 

Many immigrants who are in the country illegally are already enrolled for some government-funded programs, but they only cover emergencies and pregnancies. 

Serrano was one of hundreds of immigrant activists who came to the Capitol on Monday for "Immigrant Day of Action." She and her husband spent the day meeting with lawmakers, sharing Angeles' story. 

"The conversation that I have is about the cost," she said, describing her interactions with lawmakers. "The conversation we want to have is about our families."

(Fox)  -  Los Angeles officially declared itself a “sanctuary city” Friday against the backdrop of the Trump administration’s tough policies aimed at illegal immigrants.

"We declare, for all those who have been under attack in this Trump era, that this city, in this day, in this time, will be a city of sanctuary," City Councilman Gilbert Cedillo said. "It will be a place where people will know that they will be judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin, and not by who they choose to love, and not by when they got here. They will be judged by their contributions to our city."

The City Council voted 12-2 to approve the non-binding resolution nearly a year and a half after it was first proposed. Other cities like have adopted their own sanctuary city policies.

Friday's resolution declares Los Angeles to be a “City of Sanctuary, protecting the human rights of all our residents.”

Some immigrants-rights advocates however, said the vote came too late.

“They missed the opportunity to do this when it really mattered — back when the immigrant community of Los Angeles needed to know where its city stood,” Hector Villagra, executive director of the ACLU of Southern California, told the Los Angeles Times.

Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom challenged the Trump administration repeatedly as he was sworn in to office Monday, particularly on immigration.

The former San Francisco mayor became the state’s 40th governor, succeeding the term-limited Jerry Brown.

“People’s lives, freedom, security, the water we drink, the air we breathe — they all hang in the balance,” Newsom, 51, told a crowd of hundreds packed into a tent outside the state Capitol.

He says children should not be “ripped away from their parents” at the border, and they also shouldn’t be left hungry while Trump pledges to spend billions of dollars on “a wall that should never be built.”

(LA Weekly)  -  An average of 22.8 percent — or 2 million — of California’s children lived below the poverty threshold in 2013-15; that figure is $30,000 a year for a family of four, according to a number released earlier this year. The number of children in poverty is down from 24.4 percent in 2011-13.

Last month, a state task force recommended that lawmakers increase by as much as $1.6 million spending on child care, food assistance and other social services for children living in impoverished circumstances.

Assemblywoman Autumn Burke (D-Marina del Rey) sponsored legislation last year to address the epidemic of child poverty, dubbing it a “call to action.”

Assembly Bill 1520, which faced a six-month uphill battle and had key provisions removed before it passed the Legislature, was signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown on Oct. 2, 2015.

California state legislators passed a resolution Thursday calling on Congress to formally apologize, and for President Donald Trump to join them in acknowledging wrongdoing in separating illegal alien family units at the border

State Senators Kevin de León, Richard Pan, and Scott Wiener authored the joint resolution that was scheduled for debate, and passed on Thursday. 

KPBS reported just three legislators opposed — Joel Anderson, Mike Morrell, and Jim Nielsen — while 29 approved it, and eight didn’t vote.

The California Senate resolution calls on Congress to specifically apologize to the children separated from the adult foreign nationals who illegally brought them across the U.S. border. It also petitions Congress and President Trump to acknowledge wrongdoing in separating illegal alien adults and children.

The resolution describes the policy of separating foreign nationals who have crossed the border illegally as “detrimental.” De León described the separations as “government-sanctioned kidnapping.”

Anonymous Street artists moved out to highways once again to ring in the new year by posting messages to the “Welcome to California” highway signs.

The signs were put up north of Lake Havasu, Arizona, Primm, Nevada and on Highway 95 in California and read:

“OFFICIAL SANCTUARY STATE, Felons, Illegals and MS13 Welcome! Democrats Need The Votes!”

The highway signs are apparently commemorating California’s new Sanctuary State status.

(ABC News)  -  California lawmakers voted Thursday to set rules for the state's nascent marijuana industry and to quash the growth of federal immigration detention as part of a $125 billion state budget lawmakers approved for the next fiscal year.

Lawmakers sent Gov. Jerry Brown a measure merging the state's longstanding medical marijuana law with the much more permissive rules voters approved last year to legalize pot sales to people 21 and older. The state will develop standards for organic marijuana, allow pot samples at county fairs and permit home deliveries.

The Legislature also backed a measure to limit new beds for immigration detention, dealing a blow to the Trump administration's efforts to boost deportation. The measure prevents local governments from signing or expanding contracts with federal authorities for immigration detention facilities. It also calls for the state's attorney general to review conditions at the centers.

The marijuana and immigration provisions are pieces of a one-year budget plan that increases money for education and social services while imposing new financial restrictions on the University of California following a scathing audit. It cleared the Assembly and Senate mostly along party lines with only a handful of Republicans in support.

Brown, a Democrat, has called the budget "balanced and progressive." Legislative Democrats said it would help alleviate poverty while building up savings for a future economic downturn.

(ABC 10 News)  -  California is one step closer to becoming a Sanctuary State. Today, eight mayors in San Diego County protested Senate Bill 54 moving forward. Meanwhile, lawmakers continue to work on a second bill to help protect immigrant rights. 

The proposal is to help immigrants in California fight against deportation. The bill would create a legal defense program regardless of the defendant's criminal background. Supporters say it would counter anti-immigrant rhetoric from the Trump administration. 

A separate bill kept immigrant advocates and local mayors divided at a meeting on Wednesday. Mayors from Poway, El Cajon, Coronado, Escondido, La mesa, San Marcos, Santee and Vista say it would put residents at a risk of danger.

If SB54 passes, they say state and local law enforcement would not be able to notify federal agencies of dangerous criminals being released from jail. 

Poway Mayor Steve Vaus says it prevents police officers from doing their jobs. 

"Fundamentally, SB54 would sever the lines of communication between local law enforcement and state and federal agencies. Agencies that are charged with keeping us safe and making sure people follow the law. That's bad news," said Vaus.

 

"If you take away a street cops' radio and they lose communication, its bad. If you take away their communication with other agencies. That's bad too."

 

Supporters of the bill say it further feeds into discrimination that tears families apart. 

 

SB54 needs two-thirds vote to pass.

(Breitbart California)  -  Over 100 people gathered in front of the Hall of Justice in Downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday evening to protest L.A. County Sheriff Jim McDonnell’s opposition to State Senate Bill 54, which would declare all of California a “sanctuary state.”

According to the Los Angeles Daily News, protesters held up signs that read, “One struggle, united” and “We demand immigrant rights.”

David Abud, with the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, reportedly spoke over a loudspeaker against SB 54. He said McDonnell’s “argument is that if we don’t pass this, ICE is going to carpet-bomb our community with deportation. That is a ridiculous argument.”

Last month, 161 illegal aliens were arrested throughout Southern California by federal immigration authorities. (Some raids are reportedly ongoing.) The raids took place over the course of several days and resulted in the arrests of 680 illegal aliens across multiple states. That, in turn, upset many of the state’s Democratic lawmakers.

SB 54 was introduced by California State Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) in December. In February, Breitbart News reported that de Léon said that “‘half his family’ was in the country illegally, using false documents, and eligible for deportation under President Trump’s new executive order against ‘sanctuary’ jurisdictions.”

According to the Daily News, McDonnell wrote to De León earlier this month: “SB 54 would not allow the safe transfer of custody; rather it would force immigration enforcement agents into our communities in order to search out and find the person they seek. While doing this, they will most surely cast a wide net over our communities, apprehending and detaining those not originally the target of the enforcement actions.”

Breitbart News reported that on Tuesday, newly re-elected L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti released a new set of protections for illegal aliens that cement the city’s status as a sanctuary city, and defy the Trump administration’s efforts to ensure compliance with federal law.

(Orange County Register)  -  Los Angeles County leaders have voted to set aside $3 million to help provide lawyers to immigrants facing deportation in response to the election of Donald Trump.

The Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 Tuesday to set aside the funds over the next 18 months.

During a lengthy meeting, many residents voiced support for the plan as a matter of justice. Some opposed, saying there are more pressing needs like homelessness.

The money will go toward a $10 million immigrant legal services fund being created by the county, city of Los Angeles and private foundations.

Cities and counties in Democratic strongholds across the country have been funding immigration lawyers in response to Trump’s promises to boost deportations.

California state lawmakers have proposed a bill to provide lawyers to immigrants facing deportation.
